What should this site's short description say?

+5
−0

The site list has a short description of each community. This description is sometimes also used in ads. It's outward-facing, what you want people who aren't already here to know. Some examples:

Writing: Our community for anybody interested in the craft of professional writing, editing, and publishing.

Cooking: Our community for people interested in cooking and questions about it - methods, processes, recipes, tips, and recommendations.

Electrical Engineering: Our community for professionals, hobbyists, and students of electrical and electronic engineering.

What should this description say for Languages & Linguistics? "Our community for" is common to all of them. How should this site complete that clause?

Would you consider a stop-gap while something suitable is being prepared?: .. specific languages, language in general, and linguistics.

For now I used: "Our community for anyone interested in specific (human) languages, language and its constructs more generally, or linguistics." I'm not a linguist, so I don't know if there's too much overlap between the second and third clauses. If y'all develop something better, it's pretty easy for us to update.

Is there a "long description"? I mean, do you (or other members that you know of) hope to see the L&L group subdivided into different areas, or have all of them mixed together? Or is there a chat thread where the vision discussion happened? FWIW, I see potential in at least some mixing, so that posts don't need to be d-ved because "this isn't about the English Language"... Please add a pointer to whatever public talk the L&L members have had/are having about L&L's "mission".

@Conrado‭ the vision will likely evolve over time, and we can adapt as the community's wishes change. There was discussion on the proposal for this community, and now that the community exists, this Meta category is the best place to continue those discussions. The "long description" should find its way into the help/FAQ, which moderators can edit.

The stop-gap text (the short description) seems to me remarkably good. The three clauses overlap each other a lot. But together they disambiguate each other. I'm not sure whether we need to polish it any further until we receive complaints or misunderstandings. Of course, any suggestions for a replacement text posted as answers at this question would be welcome at any time.
