I don't have an exact answer, but I think one thing in play here is that "fight" can be either a noun or a verb. In "fight your fears" it is a verb. In "fight shy" it is a noun, shy of fights. The first place where I saw "shy" used that way was in "gun shy", shy of guns. (more) |
