Is it true to say that Lao script is a simplified version of the Thai script?

A criteria might be:

  • Less letters
  • Less diacritics
  • Less Tone markers
  • More reforms over the years (possibly due to French influence that was lacked in Thailand but was abundant in Laos and Vietnam)

I get the impression that the Lao script is simpler at least in the sense that it has less letters.
