I believe the relationship is more with the "starting" connotation (note the "start out again" usage in your quoted text). (more) |

Fair point; I was originally going to limit to Ancient Greek with a separate post for koine through middle, but there's a lot of resource overlap. Changed to "historical greek" for clarity. (more) |

That's why I noted above that it really comes down to how you define "word." It's not false to say that all Chinese words are one character, but it can lead to misconceptions from those of us with western backgrounds with fewer single-concept amalgamations. (more) |

A: Is it really true that all Chinese words have one syllable? Mandarin is represented in characters. Each character is a single syllable. A guide can be found here showing the pronunciations as romanized in Pinyin (alternative romanization patterns exist but are rarely used today). If a "word" is defined as a single character, then yes, all words are a ... (more) |

Question | — |
Is posting links to commercial content as part of a resource post allowed? I'm currently working on the Ancient Greek resources page. There are several textbooks I've used and found useful, as well as various other resources that are not open source. What should our policy be for these kind of recommendations; just a name? An Amazon link is okay? Limit to free resources onl... (more) |

A: How should we customize the Resources category? Should we also change the default license? If we eventually end up with some kind of community user for maintenance purposes as suggested here we might want to suggest a more open license. (more) |

Historical Greek Educational Resources Please post resources below for learning or studying Historical Greek. At the moment this will be a catch-all post; eventually some categories may spin off into their own resource lists. Question | — |
How do linguists determine historical pronunciation? There were two recent questions (here and here) about historical pronunications. I know that languages evolve in sound over time, but how do linguists determine what the original phonology was several hundred or thousand years ago before we had audio recordings? What techniques or heuristics do t... (more) |

To me a wiki is nearly synonymous with resources - I considered "wiki and resource library" but that seemed redundant. I don't have a terribly strong opinion one way or another. (more) |

A: How should we customize the Resources category? Description: > A community wiki for language enthusiasts. Help text: > - Provide a short description of each resource you post > - Add a language tag to your post (where appropriate) > - If you are listing multiple kinds of resources, break them up using markdown formatting so categories a... Is the intention to give each language a single top level post ("Mandarin") with multiple categories, or is it encouraged to have separage posts for e.g. "Mandarin learning phone apps list and ratings," "Best textbooks for Chinese language learners," and "Chinese dictionaries?" Sorry, I read the othe... (more) |

We could use a resource tag as a way to distinguish these questions from regular Q&A. I'm not sure an entirely separate category is necessary; as time passes the wiki aspect will likely predominate and new questions will become rare. (more) |
