My experience in Spanish.SE suggests that they can be helpful to cover small and specific answers to broad questions (_what is the usage of this word?_ and people describing one for a country), but I do't think we are there yet. Also, the language tags could appear first on the list of tags, instead of interleaved (I guess the sorting now is based on the number of questions using each tag).
